More than 25 years after he eluded charges of raping and sexually abusing children and fled to America, the story of one of Ireland’s most notorious fugitives from justice has gone global.

The 10-part BBC Sounds podcast Where Is George Gibney?, about Ireland’s former national and Olympic swimming coach, has been downloaded more than a million times. It has been this country’s most listened-to podcast since August, while drawing audiences in 160 other nations, including the UK, America, Australia, Canada, Singapore and across Europe. Such is its success, the BBC is simultaneously broadcasting the series on Radio5 Live on Saturday nights.
